Josh Thompson has been told he is free to leave Pompey.

The 21-year-old centre-back was loaned out to Colchester United shortly after caretaker boss Guy Whittingham took charge following Michael Appleton’s departure.

At the time, it seemed decidedly unlikely that Thompson would return to Fratton Park.

Now Whittingham has confirmed the former Celtic defender is not in his future plans, while also reiterating that fellow loanee Luke Rodgers will not be coming back either.

‘I don’t think there is a future for him (Thompson) here,’ said Whittingham.

‘For me, the centre-backs that we have got are the ones we need to go forward with.

‘It’s more than likely, I think, that he will stay at Colchester for the rest of the season.

‘I don’t actually know the ins and outs of it but I think Colchester want him and, if they do, that’s fantastic for him.

‘I would think that he will join them permanently in January. Luke Rodgers will be the same.’

Even with the prospect of Gabor Gyepes leaving the club in January, it’s now clear that Thompson is not rated highly enough to even be considered as a potential replacement for the Hungarian.

But Whittingham has reassured Lubomir Michalik that he is in his plans, after the Slovakian defender lost his place to Ricardo Rocha in recent weeks.

Whittingham said: ‘Lubo was left out a couple of weeks ago but has applied himself fantastically well.

‘He was disappointed he was left out at the time and had every right to be disappointed.

‘But I couldn’t praise him enough for the way he has trained. I’ve been really pleased with his attitude and he will be needed over the next few games.’
