Plymouth held as League One play-off plot thickens

Honours even, spoils shared and certainly a just scoreline in the eyes of Nicky Shorey.

A goalless draw was played out at the Kassam Stadium on Saturday as Pompey maintained their recent solid form.

In truth, neither Richie Barker’s side or their Oxford hosts looked like breaking the deadlock to claim the full three points from the fixture.

Although, it was Joe Devera who had the best chance of the entire match when he agonisingly failed to make a connection at the far post from Jed Wallace’s late free-kick.

Still, for Shorey – one of three Pompey debutantes – it was the correct result for both sides.

And in the process he was impressed with how the Blues handled themselves at their promotion-hunting opponents.

‘It was a great point from the lads. We showed good character, had to dig in at times and I thought we contained them pretty well,’ said Shorey.

‘There weren’t many chances for both teams, really.

‘I thought on the run of play it was probably fair.

‘I was actually really impressed with the togetherness in our team. We went to a club doing well and showed we are in it together and trying to get up the table as quickly as we can.

‘That point will give us a lot of confidence. We have kept a clean sheet against Oxford, we’ve nullified them and they didn’t really have too many chances. I think that is a positive and we can take it forward.’

Shorey made his debut alongside Ryan Taylor and Daniel Alfei in a new-look Pompey side.

The 32-year-old left Bristol City at the turn of the year, after his short-term contract was not renewed.

After training with the Blues at the start of last week, he was snapped up by Barker until the end of the campaign.

And Shorey is hoping to make a Fratton Park impression.

He added: ‘The players here have really made us lads coming in welcome and we appreciate that.

‘I’m just happy I am out on the pitch getting positive results, that’s the main thing.

‘When I left Bristol City I was a little bit concerned where I would go next, but my main goal is just to play and enjoy it and be in a place where I can hopefully flourish.

‘And I believe this is the right place.’
