Ex-Portsmouth winger suffers 9-8 defeat after staggering comeback

For his Nuneaton Borough youth side lost 9-8 '“ having led 7-2 with 28 minutes remaining.

Turner made 45 appearances and scored three times for Pompey after arriving from Spurs in August 1996 under Terry Fenwick.

Now aged 43, he was this season appointed Academy manager at National League North side Nuneaton.

Yet after an encouraging start to the campaign, his youngsters suffered a remarkable scoreline reversal against Halesowen in the FA Youth Cup last week.

Borough at one stage led 5-1 and 7-2 during the second qualifying round fixture at Liberty Way.

However, Halesowen's Emlyn Tudgay scored twice in time added on to complete a stunning comeback from the visitors to triumph 9-8.

It left Borough's Luis Corcoran on the losing side, despite netting five times.

Turner, who left Pompey in the summer of 1998, went on to play for Crystal Palace, Rotherham and Yeovil, before entering youth coaching at the likes of Wolves and Nottingham Forest.
