Fantastic Freddie fires timely reminder to Hart

Guy Whittingham hailed his senior pros after inspiring the reserves to victory over West Ham.

A strong Blues side featured fit-again Steve Finnan, the dropped Frederic Piquionne, Mike Williamson in his first appearance, Danny Webber and Antti Niemi at West Leigh Park last night.

They responded by helping Whittingham's men to a 3-0 success, Piquionne grabbing two with youngster Gael Nlundulu the other.

And the development coach paid tribute to the first-teamers present.

He said: 'I'm delighted with the performance. When you produce performances like that you get the right results.

'Everybody put in what they wanted to put in.

'The first-team pros that came in played excellently and their attitude was fantastic. That made a huge difference to the players out there.

'The effort that Danny and Freddie put in, steady Eddie Steve Finnan, Mike Williamson, Antti, they really did play well and it was good for the lads to have amongst them.

'You always think and hope the first-team players come in with a good attitude – and they decided to do that.'

A superb strike from youngster Nlundulu on 75 seconds set Pompey Reserves on course for victory.

And while his effort from distance was worthy of the entrance fee alone, so were the two from Frenchman Piquionne.

The first he headed in from a Finnan cross on 59 minutes before lashing home another when substitute Cherno Samba set him up with a defence-splitting pass.

Finnan came through 85 minutes and thoroughly deserved the massive round of applause he received from the 325 spectators.

Former Blues midfielder Nigel Quashie returned to familiar territory in the colours of West Ham but was largely anonymous before he was substituted on 65 minutes.

And in truth, the Hammers performance was ordinary at best – the only player to impress was youngster Josh Payne, a former Portsmouth schoolboy and one of the West Ham first-team squad beaten at Manchester City 24-hours earlier.

But while West Ham huffed and puffed, Pompey were out to impress.

And although Piquionne limped out of the fray late on, he should have fired himself firmly into Paul Hart's thoughts for Saturday's Premier League trip to Wolves.
