Gaffer: Portsmouth must starting killing teams off

Have your say

Gaffer for a day Basher Benfield, aged 54 from Copnor, previews Pompey’s trip to Scunthorpe.

I’ve been following Pompey since 1972 and we’ve never won at Scunthorpe – that’s not to say it won’t change on Saturday, though.

I always believe records are there to be broken. This is a different team in a different season, and there is no reason why we can’t get at least a point there.

Besides, Sheffield United is what you would call a real jinx ground, with so many defeats and sending offs.

I would be satisfied with a point, even at this stage of the season a draw is good. We are averaging four points out of every six, which is promotion form.

You expect to be knocked off the top of the table at some stage this season, it happens, and we’ve got some big games coming up against Sunderland and Barnsley.

The thing is, we are not playing well and it is clear we can do better. Someone will get a stuffing from us eventually – or perhaps we’ll get stuffed ourselves. You cannot go the season unbeaten away from home.

Another four wins and we are safe, from there we can push on and then the players can relax. Let's get 50 points and everything else is a bonus.

We should finish in the top six, it will be a disaster if we don’t.

As regards the team selection against Scunthorpe, let's leave it as it is, no need to change things at the moment. I’ll be surprised if Kenny Jackett tweaked it.

Ronan Curtis came back into form against Maidenhead before the break, although I’m a little worried about Gareth Evans running out of steam in the last 10 minutes, when he normally gets substituted. Regardless, Evans is having a great season.

My biggest bugbear is not killing teams off, that’s really annoying. We must go for the throat, while not play around with the ball late on and get caught out as a result.

Put the ball into Row Z – no opponent can score from there.

Pompey: Craig MacGillivray, Nathan Thompson, Jack Whatmough, Matt Clarke, Lee Brown, Naylor, Ben Thompson, Jamal Lowe, Gareth Evans, Ronan Curtis, Oli Hawkins.
