Donohue backed to be Pompey attacking asset

Have your say

Guy Whittingham felt his Pompey side dominated their clash with Torquay after seeing his side held to a 1-1 draw.

The Blues boss pointed to the possession and territory his team enjoyed for much of the second half, even though they struggled to create many clear-cut openings.

Whittingham was happy with his side’s bravery on the ball against Torquay’s direct style of play but was disappointed it did not yield three points.

Whittingham said: ‘How do you sum it up when you have totally dominated the game and only come away drawing?

‘It’s disappointing because we’ve played really well.

‘We started very badly. You can’t afford not to attack balls.

‘We didn’t do that to the first one booted up front by them and we paid for it because we couldn’t get the ball clear.

‘But we dominated possession after that. We asked them to be brave on the ball and we did that well.

‘You could criticise the players and talk about the quality on the end of all that possession.

‘But sometimes it’s quality and sometimes it’s good defending.

‘There are a team full of disappointed players that we haven’t won the game.

‘All you can ask is the effort we’ve put in and we did that.

‘But I’m really pleased for Ryan Bird to get his goal.

‘He is off the mark now and will keep pressing for his first start now.’
