Pompey 0 Charlton 1: they said what?

Have your say

Guy Whittingham has revealed he is contemplating some changes to his side ahead of today’s Easter Monday showdown with Tranmere Rovers.

The Blues entertain Ronnie Moore’s side fresh from the 1-1 draw at Preston on Friday.

But Whittingham is wary of the workload his players have undertaken lately and is also mindful that others have had to bide their time.

The caretaker Blues boss said: ‘We’ve got a few options – people like Sam Sodje, Adam Webster, Jack Maloney and Ashley Harris are all eager to play so making a change or two is something we are definitely considering.

‘But we also want to try to keep some of the continuity that we have got.

‘We made substitutions with this game in mind at Preston.

‘Dan Butler came on, helped us shore things up a bit and it’s a tough decision on whether him or Shaun Cooper plays at the moment because Shaun has also done well.

‘Patrick Agyemang and David Connolly needed a breather.

‘They have absolutely worked their socks off for us over the past few weeks and with the Tranmere game in mind, I felt they needed a rest.

‘But John Akinde came on and did well and has had to be patient for his chance.’

While those switches were made with a view to fitness, Whittingham replaced Liam Walker in a tactical move as he battles to keep his place today.

Whittingham said: ‘Liam came off because I felt we needed to battle our way to a point at Preston.

‘I’m not sure it was his type of game. He wasn’t playing badly but he couldn’t get in the game. Then again, not many of us could at times.

‘I think he needs to be playing when we are playing better football and it was more of a battling game where you had to get stuck in and grind out a point.

‘But this game could be very different.’
