POMPEY fans’ bid to take over the club has received the backing of MPs at a parliamentary event.

Portsmouth North MP Penny Mordaunt hosted a meeting on Tuesday which was attended by nearly 70 MPs and representatives of the Pompey Supporters’ Trust (PST).

Ms Mordaunt told those at the meeting: ‘I have ridden shotgun with the PST during this bid process and I have been shocked at the barriers they have encountered.

‘Football clubs are stuck with seemingly impossible barriers if they want to create community clubs.

‘I hope we will have a happy outcome shortly.

‘MPs and Lords with an interest in football are willing the trust’s bid to succeed because it is clearly the best and the right thing to happen.’

The chairman of the
department for culture, media and sport’s select committee, John Whittingdale, also expressed his support for the trust.
