Is Michael Doyle's wonder goal Pompey's best of the season?

However, the highlight of a fine team performance was the goal scored by skipper Michael Doyle.

The stunning 30-yard, left-footed volley was his first for the Blues and put them 3-0 up against their promotion rivals.

After the game the Irishman said it was the best goal he had ever scored. And it is no doubt a contender for goal of the season.

But how does it compare to the best from Pompey this term?

Here we have taken a look back at some of the finest goals of the campaign so far...

Gary Roberts vs AFC Bournemouth

With half-time approaching in the FA Cup tie, Pompey were content to get to the break at 0-0 against their Premier League opponents.

Ben Close did excellently to win the ball back just inside the Blues half and from there started a passing move which lasted for nearly two-and-a-half minutes and involved all 11 players on the pitch.

A total of 47 passes later and Marc McNulty found himself free in the area to tee up Roberts, who took a touch before firing the ball into the far corner.

Conor Chaplin vs Derby County

What a time to score your first goal at Fratton Park. With 15 minutes to go and the score locked at 1-1 with Championship side Derby County, up stepped Academy graduate Chaplin to send Paul Cook’s men into the second round of the Capital One Cup.

Some good work down the left saw Danny Hollands lob a pass over to Enda Stevens. The Irishman fizzed a ball in and Chaplin fired in a first-time effort into the far corner, leaving the Rams’ goalkeeper with no chance.

Gary Roberts vs Morecambe

On a bizarre summer afternoon at Fratton Park, this game had absolutely everything. Pompey looked like a rabbit caught in the headlights as Morecambe raced into a 3-0 lead inside 38 minutes.

Roberts curled in a free-kick shortly before half-time but his best effort was yet to come. Receiving the ball on the right-hand side, he cut in on to his trusted left foot, beat two defenders and curled a wonderful effort inside the far post from just inside the area as the Blues roared back to snatch a draw.

Adam McGurk vs Oxford United

Pompey found themselves 1-0 down before a moment of magic from McGurk earned them a point at the Kassam Stadium.

Adam Barton found himself in acres of space and picked out McGurk who took one touch before firing a left-footed effort from 30 yards into the bottom corner.

Kyle Bennett vs Ipswich

They say you’re most vulnerable to conceding once you have just taken the lead. That was certainly the case at Portman Road as Bennett equalised for Pompey just two minutes after they fell behind.

Hollands won the ball in midfield and found Roberts in plenty of space. He assessed his options and played in McNulty who took a touch and put it on a plate for Bennett to pass the ball into the far corner.

Marc McNulty vs Cambridge United

A great team goal gave Pompey the lead in this clash with Cambridge.

Doyle took a quick free-kick around 40 yards out, which Conor Chaplin played first time into the path of McNulty. The Scotsman took one touch, which beat the U’s defender, before opening up his body and firing in off of the underside of the bar.
