Kal Naismith has thrown down his Pompey title ambition.
The Blues’ new recruit from Accrington Stanley upped the ante when it comes to his side’s League Two target next season.
I’m not just looking to get promoted - I want to win the league.Kal Naismith
Naismith last week agreed a three-year deal at Fratton Park after becoming Paul Cook’s second summer signing.
The 23-year-old has already outlined his determination to repay Cook’s faith in him, after he handed him a long-term agreement.
And now he has shown his appetite for success by stating he is here to go up as champions.
Cook was applauded for his statement of intent when saying promotion was the club’s aim after his appointment.
That’s in contrast to previous Pompey managers, who have tried to keep a lid on expectations.
The bookies once again have the Blues as favourite to lift the title.
And Naismith is out to ensure his new club live up to that billing.
He said: ‘With Portsmouth there is expectation to win the league next season and get up.
‘The aim now is really up to the club.
‘There’s a lot of good in place and a great manager in place.
‘We know what the club is, it’s a massive club.
‘We know what the club should be achieving.
‘We all know this next season.
‘As players we should be there or thereabouts for promotion. That’s what I’m hoping.
‘I’m not just looking to get promoted – I want to win the league.
‘Everything is in place for it to happen. It’s up to us as players to make it happen.
‘If we get it right and work hard I’m sure we can.’
Naismith arrived as Pompey’s second summer signing, after deciding to leave Accrington as a free agent.
He arrives along with Kyle Bennett, who agreed a two-year deal after turning down League One side Doncaster Rovers.
Naismith was impressed by what his new manager had to say about his ambitions for his new club, and the players he’s looking to bring in.
He’s sure Pompey’s man at the helm is on the way up.
Naismith said: ‘There’s no doubt about the manager – look at what he did with Chesterfield.
‘Look at what he did getting them promoted and what he achieved last season.
‘He’s a top manager.
‘I’m not saying it will all happen overnight.
‘Sometimes you have to be a bit patient.
‘But I’m sure the gaffer will get the club back to where it should.
‘I’m sure there are good players at the club already.
‘The gaffer will add to that. He signed Kyle Bennett the other day and I’ve come in.
‘The gaffer will add to it with good players and we’ll kick on.’
