Pompey Ladies are weighing up taking to the field in a non-Pompey away strip next season in a bid to solve their kit headache.
Vanessa Raynbird’s side will this season turn out in the National League for the first time ever after clinching promotion.
However, they will do so in matches away from their Moneyfields base wearing a seven-year-old kit.
As it stands, the ladies – who are not funded by Pompey – currently don the red 2005-06 away colours.
Once worn by Laurent Robert, the strip has been described by Pompey Ladies chairman Dave Coyle as making the team look like ‘paupers’.
Their home kit is the 2009-10 Kappa version, while their official second kit is a white one from the 2007-08 campaign which usually clashes with the opposition.
Pompey themselves plan talks with manufacturers Kappa over their continuing role in any strip for the club.
Michael Appleton’s men at present have no idea which kit they will be wearing in the season ahead and, as a result, none will be on sale until well into the campaign.
The knock-on means the ladies, who are seeking sponsors for the campaign ahead, will have to keep their current aging strips.
That is unless they ditch their old away kit in favour of a new one without Pompey branding and funded entirely by themselves.
That is a decision Coyle is considering, with their National League campaign starting on Sunday, August 19.
He said: ‘Obviously Pompey are in the situation where they are unsure over their kit.
‘As the club we represent, we want to wear the same one. The trouble is we cannot wait.
‘We have an away kit that urgently needs replacing.
‘The rigours of playing week in, week out takes its toll on kit, especially one that is seven years old.
‘This season we’re in the National League and will look like paupers against some of our opponents. You cannot go around in tatters.
‘It really is a desperate situation, we cannot keep nursing our kit through season after season. It’s had it.
‘We might have to buy a new away kit which is not even a Pompey one as our red version is in a really poor state.
‘I realise it’s not the best thing but there’s not a lot you can do about it and it’s a crying shame.’
