The hindsight-fuelled Pompey midfield debate which won’t fade

Have your say

Liam Lawrence wants to be central to a Championship resurgence for Pompey.

The Blues skipper admitted he feels he is more effective being used in the middle of the park for his team.

Lawrence believes he is able to dictate proceedings and have a greater impact on play when being used inside.

The 29-year-old has mainly featured on the right flank since arriving from Stoke last year.

But he has now revealed his preference would be to play in an attacking central role.

The Republic of Ireland international has operated both centrally and on the right in recent games.

He has made it clear he is still perfectly happy to perform out wide for Pompey but, given the choice, would operate in an area he feels he can have a bigger influence on games.

Lawrence said: ‘I like to be in the middle. I like to be able to get on the ball.

‘When we got hold of the ball and I’m there, I feel I do okay with it.

‘Right or centre is good for me but I like the middle.’

Pompey return to action this weekend against Barnsley in their Saturday tea-time meeting.

Lawrence knows it’s a game that his team need to use to kick-start their campaign.

He said; ‘We need to get the season going.

‘Until we do that the season is going nowhere.

‘We need some wins. We’re playing okay but we need to start better.

‘I’m captain and I’m going to give it everything to get things going.

‘I’m getting there. I’m starting to get my second wind quicker in games.

‘My feet are coming back, too.

‘I felt I played okay in the last couple of games.’
