Jamal Lowe saluted Craig MacGillivray for his penalty save as he told the keeper: Don’t do that again!

MacGillivray atoned for his mistake to keep out Billy Kee’s penalty at Accrington on Saturday.

On 32 minutes, the Pompey stopper mishandled Sean McConville’s corner before bringing down Kee with his legs when chasing the loose ball.

The referee instantly pointed to the penalty spot, with nobody but the Scottish talent bemoaning the decision.

However, he saved his blushes by beating Kee’s spot-kick around his right-hand post.

Lowe admitted he didn’t expect MacGillivray to keep out the penalty.

He heaped praise on the former Walsall man for his save – but ordered him not to repeat his actions in the future.

‘I’ve told him he can’t be giving away penalties just so he can try to save it!’ said Lowe.

‘He shouldn’t have given away the pen, but the best thing to do when you do is to save it.

‘Fair play to him.

‘He’s been very solid and he’s got up and silenced everyone.

‘I was not confident that the big man was going to save it – I was not!

‘It’s a penalty, he’s (Kee) supposed to score a penalty.

‘But he saved it anyway, he’s my mate and he saved it.

‘Thank god he saved it, so big up Craig Mac.’

Oli Hawkins gave Pompey the lead at Accrington when he steered Gareth Evans’ free-kick home in the 62 minute.

John Coleman’s side were level just two minutes later, though, when Michael Ihiekwe towered above the Blues’ rearguard to head into the net.

Accy had more of the ball after their equaliser, with MacGillivray ensuring Kenny Jackett’s men earned a point by keeping out Connor Hall’s swivelling effort in stoppage-time.

Overall, the keeper has made a super start since arriving at Fratton Park on a free transfer from Shrewsbury.

Lowe lauded the impact MacGillivray has made at Pompey.

The winger added: ‘He’s been ledge since arriving.

‘When he comes for crosses, you know nine times or 10 times out of 10 that it’s safe.

‘It’s been a massive thing for us.

‘We’ve only lost one game and a lot of that is down for Craig.

‘He’s confident when he comes for things, he makes point-blank saves and his decision-making is good.

‘He’s been a great signing.’
