Richard Money is convinced Pompey will be League Two champions this season after seeing his Cambridge side spurn their ‘golden opportunity’ to win at Fratton Park.

The U’s boss, who suffered an injury-hit playing spell at Pompey back in the 1980s, firmly believes his old club will be promoted this term – but felt his side should have taken something from the game against 10 men.

Money said: ‘I didn’t say I think they will win the league – I said they will win the league.

‘They have got a good team and they have got 18,500 people screaming them on.

‘That can become a problem when you are struggling but it can become massive momentum when you are winning.

‘I don’t see them losing many games at Fratton Park this season.

‘But we should have won, given the way the game has gone. I think we will walk away from here thinking it was a golden opportunity missed.

‘When it was 11 v 11, we were much the better team.

‘They looked dangerous on the counter-attack, but apart from that we bossed it.

‘It’s not easy to play through nine people and you hope that something will drop for you.

‘But if we had played with a real belief, it could have been a lot better for us.’

Money also believes his side need to learn lessons quickly after last season’s promotion back to the Football League.

He said: ‘Maybe there are a lot of people who are happy to be in the stadium thinking “isn’t it wonderful we are back in the Football League playing against Portsmouth”.

‘I’m not interested in that.

‘Paul Hardyman, who I played with here, said to me at the end of the game “you’ve got a good team there” as though he was surprised by it.

‘We know we have got a good team but we’ve got to learn very quickly and believe we are as good as we think we can be.’
