Cosham’s Rob Deacon, 26, has his say on the victory at Rodney Parade.
How did you find that?
It was hard to judge the game. Not boring but not a lot to watch – yet we still won.
We did what we had to do, kept possession and didn’t look like conceding. Although we didn’t look like scoring many either!
In fairness to Newport, they didn’t sit back and operated with two strikers up front for most of the game.
It was good to see a team attack.
As for the decisive goal, Kyle Bennett’s reverse through ball was fantastic.
What do you making of Pompey’s playing style?
I actually really like the way we play, even if a lot of people demand to attack, attack and attack.
The idea seems to be to keep possession and wear the opposition out. Possession is always in our favour by quite a margin.
I want to see good football like that and wasn’t a great supporter of the style we tended to play when Jayden Stockley was on the pitch, lobbing it up to him.
The football we play now will help get us through the leagues.
I regularly watch the League Two highlights and cannot name many other teams that play the passing game, it tends to be a lot of long football.
Your man of the match?
It had to be Adam Webster. I thought he dealt with everything superbly. Nothing got past him.
I was actually really surprised he was in the team. I didn’t see the line-up before I got into the ground, so it came as a bit of a shock!
At centre-half he is one of our best, that is his strongest position.
On Saturday, everything Newport had to offer he was there to cut it out. He had a really good game.
Apparently some people have been saying Matt Clarke had played poorly recently but I’ve not really season that myself.
Perhaps Christian Burgess has been covering for him.
What were your thoughts on the two debutants off the bench?
Rommy Boco looks different, he can provide us with another option, while his movement reminded me of Jed Wallace.
It’s the way he picks the ball up and cuts inside. Kal Naismith and Gareth Evans look to hit the byline but Boco wants a pass or one-twos. It’s hard to tell over 31 minutes but I like the look of him.
Caolan Lavery was okay, an energetic player who actually looked a bit tired towards the end, maybe he needs more match fitness.
He seems a decent player to bring on. Everyone knows Matt Tubbs is not a 90-minute player, so it’s good to have someone else.
Rob’s ratings: Aaron McCarey 6, Ben Davies 6, Christian Burgess 7, Adam Webster 9, Enda Stevens 6, Michael Doyle 7, Adam Barton 8, Kal Naismith 6, Gary Roberts 7, Kyle Bennett 7, Matt Tubbs 7
