Guy Whittingham believes Gosport are reaping the rewards from Nathan Ashmore’s Pompey presence.

But the Blues boss has dismissed suggestions he is eyeing up a move for the Gosport Borough keeper.

The 23-year-old has spent the past four weeks training with Pompey – and also appeared in a triallist match against Aldershot.

Employed at South Downs College, Ashmore currently has time on his hands due to the summer holidays.

Borough boss Alex Pike has given him the nod to fill that by training with Whittingham’s side while continuing to play non-league football.

It’s an arrangement Pike claims is already benefiting the keeper’s Gosport performances.

And Whittingham insists the agreement is working well for both parties.

‘Nathan is doing well. The other day I heard him talking to Linvoy (Primus), saying how much he is enjoying it,’ said Whittingham.

‘It is working well, he is having a good time.

‘He is a very nice kid and you don’t mind having those people around.

‘And when the first team aren’t around, he comes in and works with other lads on the training pitch.

‘I spoke to Alex (Pike) about him when we played them last month in a friendly and he told me Nathan was already coming in and looking sharper for them.

‘I think it is great. Great for Gosport, great for us and great for him.

‘It’s important to have such a good relationship with our local clubs like Gosport, basically helping each other out.’

Ashmore has worked alongside Phil Smith and John Sullivan under the watchful eye of goalkeeping coach Alan Knight during the past month.

A third goalkeeper available in training also helps Whittingham with certain drills and routines.

In addition, the Blues boss can also monitor the progress of the highly-regarded youngster who has been such a key figure in Gosport’s recent rise.

It is viewed as a mutually beneficial arrangement.

But Whittingham is quick to stress he is not looking to sign Ashmore in the near future.

He added: ‘We are not going down that route – he is here training to help out Gosport.

‘That is why we have him at the minute, no other reason.

‘We are not even thinking about that (signing him further down the line). We have two goalkeepers we are very happy with.

‘Nathan is training because he works at South Downs College and has some spare time – and for us it is always nice to have a third goalkeeper.’
