Romain Padovani’s first-half goal gave Pompey some much-needed festive cheer as they clung on for a 1-0 win against Dagenham & Redbridge.
The Frenchman struck with a 44th-minute header from a corner to give new boss Richie Barker his first victory as manager at the club.
Pompey dominated the first half and were deservedly ahead at the break.
Although, it could have been better if Patrick Agyemang had made the most of a good opportunity, only for his touch to let him down as he bore down on goal.
But the visitors dragged themselves back into the game after the interval as the Blues were forced back.
It meant a nervy last quarter of the contest, with Pompey defending well against a barrage of long balls.
However, with nerves becoming frayed and finger nails being bitten as five minutes of stoppage time was played, Pompey stuck to their task and claimed a deserved three points to lift the spirits and earn a first win in 10 games.
