Gareth Evans must be offered a new Pompey contract.
That’s the verdict of News Pompey writer Will Rooney.
Former Manchester United trainee Evans has been a revelation this season, playing in an advanced number 10 role.
The 30-year-old has flourished after being handed a more central attacking position in the Blues’ League One promotion charge, netting seven times in 23 appearances to date.
However, Evans is now entering the final six months of his current two-year deal, which expires in June.
Speaking to The News yesterday, the midfielder revealed discussions over a new contract have not yet started.
Although that does not appear to be affecting his performances.
Evans, who signed for the club after an initial trial back in 2015, is a firm favourite with the Fratton faithful.
And speaking in the latest edition of Pompey Talk, Rooney feels the forward must be rewarded with a new deal.
He said: ‘In terms of new contracts, there can’t be many more players in that side who deserve one.
‘You’ve got Jack Whatmough who is out of contract as well, he 100-per-cent deserves one.
‘Gareth Evans 100-per-cent deserves one as well given his form.
‘He’s been pivotal.
‘Just to have someone like him around the dressing room with that nous and experience.
‘He’s someone who knows the club and has a genuine affinity to the club.
‘Whether in the Championship he’ll be playing as much is a different question.
‘He will think he deserves to and he wants to test himself in the Championship.
‘If he plays like he has done this season, he’ll do very well in the Championship.
‘He’s a fantastic person and character to have around the Pompey camp.’
