Southend 3-1 Pompey: They said what?

Have your say

Guy Whittingham was pleased to see Pompey pick up an opening pre-season win full of positives.

The Blues boss saw his men collect a 5-0 success over the Hawks at Westleigh Park in their first warm-up game.

Triallist Ryan Bird grabbed two goals in a 45-minute outing as he staked his claim for a contract.

An own goal from Ryan Woodford and late efforts from impressive duo Andy Barcham and Romain Padovani wrapped up the win.

Whittingham could see plenty to be encouraged about from the meeting with Lee Bradbury’s side.

He said: ‘It was a good workout for the lads.

‘It’s good to get used to playing on a full-sized pitch again.

‘The second half they adapted better than the first. They impressed more in that period.

‘There were a lot of good performances and some okay performances.

‘Overall, it’s been a good night and worked out well for us.’
