Pompey Academy put behind them a disappointing sequence of league and cup results with a 4-0 victory over Peterborough United at Bognor Regis Town this morning.

Goals from Lewis Horsburgh and a Jack Maloney double separated the sides at half-time before substitute Conor Chaplin slammed a fourth late on.

Importantly, despite being put under intense pressure by a Posh side always looking capable of getting back in the match, Pompey defended in a professional manner to keep a clean sheet.

And, at the other end, the hosts could have had plenty more goals had it not been for Posh keeper Alex Lynch, who kept out efforts from Horsburgh, Maloney, Bradley Tarbuck and Chaplin.

Despite last week’s Alliance Youth League Cup semi-final loss to Bristol Rovers, Paul Hardyman’s Fratton hopefuls took just 10 minutes to open their account at Nyewood Lane today, Jack Whatmough and Ben Close creating an opening for Horsburgh to go clear and tuck the ball into the corner of the net.

Minutes later and another quality move opened up the Posh defence again and this time it was Maloney who strode through to angle a second from long distance.

Moments before the referee brought the first half to a close, Tarbuck floated a corner to the far post where Whatmough headed the ball into the path of Maloney and the net bulged with Pompey deservedly three goals ahead.

Even without several regular players still in the early stages of recovering from injury, Pompey had enough about them to stroll through much of the second half without breaking sweat, thanks to the efforts of Josh Warren and Liam Triggs in the heart of defence.

Meanwhile at the other end, Lynch was busy keeping the scoreline reasonably respectable but he was given no chance of saving Pompey’s fourth as Chaplin met a Tarbuck corner at the far post to finish in style.
