Pompey have been dealt a transfer blow after Kelvin Etuhu signed for Barnsley.

The midfielder spent the second half of last season at Fratton Park and had insisted he wanted to return to the Blues.

But the 24-year-old had a change of heart and penned a one-year deal with the Championship Tykes.

Etuhu’s snub is a big setback for Pompey manager Michael Appleton, who was expecting the former Manchester City man to be a key part of his revamped squad in League One next season.

With the majority of the Blues’ first-team squad expected to be sold this summer - and Ricardo Rocha and Jamie Ashdown released - it now means youngsters like Ashley Harris and Sam Magri could be the only faces who will remain at Fratton for next term.

Appleton gave Etuhu a second chance in football after the midfielder served a prison sentence for assault.

Pompey’s boss was confident of keeping him at the club, only for Etuhu to move to Oakwell.

Barnsley boss Keith Hill said: ‘We’re glad we’ve managed to secure the signing of Kelvin.

‘We’re really pleased and he represents good value for money and I’m just glad he chose us.

‘It’s exciting because he can play in a number of positions.’
