Portsmouth Football Club possesses a proud history – now many of those responsible for creating it have had their say.
Played Up Pompey has been written by The News’ chief sports writer Neil Allen and will hit the shops on Tuesday.
The book contains fresh interviews with 24 players whose outstanding performances for the Blues between 1949 and 2013 have established them as household names and folk heroes among the Fratton faithful.
In their own words, former players lift the lid on their Pompey days, with brutal honesty, refreshing candour and deep affection.
There is Lindy Delapenha, the last surviving member of the Division One title-winning teams of 1948-49 and 1949-50 when Pompey were the finest side in the country.
Ron Saunders, the third-highest scorer in Blues history, in addition to the club’s second-highest appearance-maker – the legendary Alan Knight.
Right through to the modern day with all-time favourites Robert Prosinecki, Matt Taylor, Arjan De Zeeuw, Paul Merson, Sylvain Distin and Ricardo Rocha.
In total, the book carries interviews with eight different recipients of The News/Sports Mail Player of the Season, nine Pompey Hall of Fame members, two FA Cup winners and a host of other Blues promotion winners at different levels of the Football League.
Priced at £16.99, it will be available from a host of newsagents across the area.
Played Up Pompey can also be bought on the October 2 launch night, with Alan Biley, Alan Rogers, Knight and Barry Harris also present for a Q&A with supporters.
