Guy Whittingham rued Pompey’s early mistakes as they were knocked out of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy tonight.
The visitors conceded two goals in the opening 18 minutes against Newport in a dreadful start.
They never recovered and even when David Pipe was sent off in the 67th minute failed to find a way back.
Conor Washington grabbed his second and County’s third in the 82nd minute to give Whittingham’s men a 3-0 defeat.
And the Blues boss was left to reflect on a costly start.
He said: ‘That first five minutes gave Newport a huge lift.
‘We knew coming here they would be up for it because of who we are and we had to make sure we were strong in the opening 20 minutes.
‘Unfortunately twice we gave them goals.
‘That gave them a lift, they were a yard quicker and the crowd got going.
‘Shapes don’t win games but desire does – and we gave them that desire.’
