Ben Chorley has been backed to show the character to battle back from his costly Accrington error.
Chorley’s mistake played a key part in Pompey falling to a 3-2 defeat to Stanley on Saturday.
That was the first loss at Fratton Park in League Two since August for Awford’s side.
It was Piero Mingoia who profited from Chorley losing the ball in his own half in the game’s crucial moment.
The defender faced stick from some sections of supporters in the wake of that incident.
But Awford believes he has the mentality to deal with that and he feels collective responsibilty is needed for the mistakes at the back.
He said: ‘Ben has character and is a good character to have in your dressing room.
‘He’s part of a unit which has conceded three goals on Saturday. We need to address that. That can’t continue.
‘But it’s a team game. We win as a team and lose as a team.’
Chorley was preferred to Jack Whatmough in the middle of defence for the Stanley game.
Awford’s view is Whatmough is not ready to play 90 minutes as he handles an ongoing knee problem.
He said: ‘Jack wasnt’t dropped.
‘In my opinion, he wasn’t fit to play for 90 minutes.
‘In my opinion, I didn’t think he would get through 90 minutes. I had to make that call.
‘He has a knee issue we’re aware of and the medical people have been looking at it.
‘We need to get him to a point where he can get through 90 minutes.
‘Then he will be available for selection.’
