A stunning free-kick from Dan Butler grabbed a late point for Pompey reserves this afternoon.
Alan McLoughlin’s men appeared to be heading for defeat in their Final Third Development League (South) game at Bournemouth – and a first loss this season.
But in the 86th minute Ben Close was fouled and up stepped skipper Butler to rattle in a 25-yard free-kick off the inside of the post to seal a 2-2 draw.
The Blues had taken a 32nd-minute lead when Close combined with Jack Maloney on the edge of the area before driving home.
The Cherries levelled three minutes before half-time through Ben Whitfield, following up after Michael Poke had produced an excellent double save.
Ali Coulibaly gave the hosts the lead in the 66th minute with a powerful finish past Poke from inside the box.
But Butler had the final say with his superb equaliser.
Pompey: Poke, Wynter, Whatmough (61 mins Granger), Nilsen, Butler, Maloney (72 mins Gill), Close, Awford, Atangana (86 mins Rwakarambwe), Barcham, Tarbuck. Subs not used: Bass.
