Defender setback – but Pompey boss sees positives

Have your say

Erik Huseklepp is preparing to join the Pompey exodus.

But the Norway international admits he doesn’t know where he will playing next season.

As one of the club’s top earners, Huseklepp is certain to be on his way from Fratton Park in the coming weeks, when his loan deal with Birmingham comes to a close.

A permanent move to St Andrew’s could emerge if the midlands side gain the Championship play-off win they need to avoid financial meltdown.

And Huseklepp’s former club SK Brann are keen to take him back to his homeland.

The 27-year-old fans’ favourite spoke of his sadness at Pompey’s relegation.

He expects that to mean he now moves on in the face of the club’s financial woes.

Huseklepp said: ‘It’s sad that we’ve gone down, but we didn’t go down without a fight.

‘I’ve heard now that all of the players are going to change clubs.

‘I don’t know who is going to be left next season.

‘I don’t know what is going to happen yet.

‘I’m having to focus on the play-offs with Birmingham.

‘Who knows what the future is going to bring at the moment?

‘The manager will probably stay, though, so hopefully we can go straight back up again.’

Huseklepp explained he closely followed Pompey’s fight to stay up after his temporary move to Birmingham in February.

He said: ‘It was a bit sad in the end that it happened.

‘I’ve followed every game when I could.

‘After a game, the first thing I would do is check how Portsmouth got on.

‘I kept an eye out for Portsmouth all of the time.

‘The club showed character by still fighting to the end.’
