Gabor Gyepes lifted himself off the treatment table to become a goal hero against Scunthorpe.
Gyepes is fighting an ankle injury which has stopped him training in his time at Pompey.
But that didn’t stop the 31-year-old thumping in his team’s leveller in their win over the Iron on Saturday.
Gyepes is a doubt for the trip to Yeovil tomorrow as he battles his injury.
He admitted the lingering problem is a cause of frustration for him.
And not being able to go about his work properly will have an impact on his form.
Gyepes said: ‘It’s always good if a centre-half can score.
‘I used to be a striker when I was younger, so I’m not too shy to be in front of the goal.
‘It was a must-win game for us.
‘We’re in a hard situation but we played well in the second half and dominated.
‘There was a penalty and we hit the post and bar and their keeper made a good save.
‘I’ve had an ankle injury but I always want to play.
‘The manager has picked me and still expects me to play well.
‘I like to train because, without, it you are not as fit as you should be.
‘But since my first game against Crawley I cannot train. I’m always in the treatment room.
‘I try to do everything to be ready for a game.
‘But I’m sick of it and it is frustrating.
‘I want to play and practice because without it everything is harder.
‘I’m a little surprised I can still play 90 minutes.
‘But if I train normally I know I can be better.’
Saturday’s victory saw Pompey come from behind to pick up their first home league win of the season.
Shipping early goals is becoming a worrying feature of Pompey’s play but Gyepes believes there will be improvements as the team become accustomed to each other.
He said: ‘It’s a bit embarrassing that we are conceding at the start of games. We are conceding too early.
‘We are working on it. We are a new team and a new back four.
‘But that is no excuse because we need results.
‘The back four is normally settled and there are no mistakes.
‘But me and (Lubomir)Michalik have played three games together so we are improving.
