Katie Poore believes competition for places is intensifying in the Pompey ranks after a crushing 17-0 cup victory against Aldershot on Sunday.

The Blues were on song throughout their Hampshire FA Women’s Challenge Cup quarter-final tie.

There was always likely to be a huge gap in class between the two teams, with Southern Region League premier division side Aldershot playing two divisions below their hosts.

Pompey were determined not to take the game lightly, and there was no sign of complacency as the current county cup holders booked a semi-final trip to Basingstoke.

Joint-boss Poore believes the competition is valuable and important for the club.

She said: ‘It’s always our goal to do well in the Hampshire FA Cup.

‘We played Aldershot in the final of this cup last year and beat them, so we were feeling quite confident we could score goals and get the result.

‘The cup runs allow us to swap the players around and give everyone an opportunity to play.

‘And everyone showed they deserved to be in the team.

‘It has been a real confidence-booster for the girls.’

Gemma Hillier fired four goals, while Charley Wilson and Lucy Quinn cashed in with hat-tricks.

Sarah Kempson added two more goals.

Tiffany Taylor, Ellie Bloomfield, Gemma Simmonds, Nadine Bazan and Naomi Greene also got on the scoresheet.

Pompey opened the scoring in the first minute, with Wilson pulling the ball back to Hillier, who found the bottom corner.

Kempson hit a 35-yard screamer for 2-0, before Hillier netted her second.

Two minutes later, Bazan fed Wilson to slot home.

Quinn struck the fourth goal and Hillier completed her hat-trick – with just 22 minutes played.

Taylor’s wonder strike made it 7-0, and Wilson then snapped up her second.

Simmonds and Kempson added more goals to put the Blues 10-0 up at the break.

In the second half, Quinn netted twice more to complete her treble, and Hillier notched her fourth, after good work from Wilson and substitute Jodie Goddall.

Full-back Bazan got in on the act with a neat finish on 70 minutes.

Striker Greene fired her first Pompey goal and teenage midfielder Bloomfield chipped home the 16th.

Jess Frampton then fed Wilson to finish the scoring with a header for her hat-trick.

Pompey Ladies are in FA Women’s Cup third-round action on Sunday when they host Lewes.
