POMPEY LADIES kicked off their defence of the Hampshire Cup with a convincing 7-0 victory against Winchester at The Simpleyhealth Ground on Sunday.
In nine out of the last 10 seasons Pompey Ladies have won the Hampshire Cup.
Jay Sadler’s side got off to a good start in Winchester, dominating the game from the first minute.
Rachel Panting and Tash Stephens ran the show for the visitors.
Panting surged down the right-hand side on countless occasions and continued to put balls into the box to look for an opening.
It was Panting who scored Pompey’s first goal of the afternoon and again it was her and Stephens linking up.
Stephens, unselfishly, put a ball across the six-yard box which left Panting with an easy chance to give Pompey a 1-0 lead.
It was Stephens involved again for the second goal, she put a ball through the hosts’ back line and left it for Samantha Quayle to slot home.
That made the score 2-0 to Pompey Ladies at the break.
Picking up from the first half, Pompey had a third and it came from a Winchester corner.
The hosts couldn’t cope with the pace of the Pompey break and Stephens rounded off the move with her first goal of the afternoon.
Two minutes later, Pompey had their fourth.
A low cross from the left found Panting again at the far post and she slotted home.
Pompey continued to show fight as they added a fifth.
Panting completed her hat-trick after a good piece of passing play for the visitors.
Quayle got her second of the afternoon on 79 minutes.
A lovely flick from Shannon Albuery put the ball through to Quayle who kept her composure to slot home Pompey’s sixth.
But Pompey weren’t done there.
A long-range strike from Shannon Sievwright which hit the bar and then the back of the net completed the dominant victory.
