POMPEY are on the lookout for the next intake of talents to get involved with their football scholarships.

The Blues, through Pompey in the Community, are offering two different scholarships beginning in September.

And those who are keen to take part are being offered the platform to showcase their skills at an open day next Tuesday.

Mountbatten Centre is staging the two-hour session for hopefuls.

The Football Development scholarship focuses on 11-a-side players at the top level.

Scholars will battle it out in the Premier League development league at under-19 level against other professional clubs.

The likes of West Ham, Chelsea, Spurs, Fulham, Watford and Birmingham are all involved in the project, with Pompey faring well last season.

Alongside that, players will take part in a two-year full-time academic programme to gain a recognised qualification.

Similarly, the Futsal and Education Scholarship focuses on boys aged between 16 and 18.

They can continue their education while gaining a Level 3 BTEC sport’s qualification.

The futsal scholarship also sees students offered Level 1 and 2 coaching qualification and work experience with PITC coaches.

Futsal is a skills-based five-a-side game which is quickly growing in popularity.

And Pompey have been enjoying success in it, after winning their south-west region league last season.

On top of that, the Blues have seen two of their players given England trials.

PITC head of community projects Clare Martin believes the scholarships are perfect courses for young players to undertake, as it still allows them to focus on their education.

Martin said: ‘It’s a great way for players to get involved with the club.

‘We’ve been doing really well and had players with the England squad. Everyone who takes part gets to play, too.’

The scholarship trials take place next week on the 4G pitch at the Mountbatten Centre from 1-3pm.
