Pompey were held to a goalless draw at Bristol City in a disappointing contest at Ashton Gate.
After an instantly-forgettable first half, in which neither side looked like scoring, the game livened up after the break, with Pompey perhaps disappointed not to have taken all three points after looking the much more dangerous team.
Luke Varney went closest to breaking the deadlock with a fantastic curler from about 25 yards that had City keeper Dean Gerken totally beaten, only for the effort to clatter back off the woodwork.
Liam Lawrence also had a point-blank header that Gerken blocked when the skipper should have scored.
New signing Erik Huseklepp made his debut as a late substitute and showed some great flashes of ability, despite being on the pitch for only five minutes.
But while Pompey were nowhere near their best, they will take a point away from home to add to their victory over Reading in midweek.
