Free agent Jimmy Ryan is in conversation with Chesterfield over a new contract.
The Pompey target has been offered a new deal by the Spireites, who are keen to retain the services of the sought-after 26-year-old midfielder.
Ryan’s contract at the Proact Stadium expires at the end of June and new Blues boss Paul Cook is keen to bring the fans’ favourite with him to Fratton Park.
While Chesterfield have tabled an offer to keep Ryan in League One, the Scouser has yet to put pen to paper as he assesses his options.
Pompey lead the chase for his signature, but new Spireites boss Dean Saunders, who succeeded Cook in the hot-seat, is hopeful of convincing Ryan to stay put.
Saunders told the official Chesterfield website: ‘I’m negotiating with Jimmy to try and get him to sign.
‘He’s got options elsewhere, but we are talking.’
