First-half goals from Tom Eaves and Alex Lacey handed Steve Lovell's side victory.

But the result keeps Pompey top of the table after Peterborough lost to Barnsley 4-0.

Here's what those closest to the action had to say about yesterday's events at Fratton Park.

Kenny Jackett

We had the lion's share of the ball in both halves - and didn't do anything with it.

The final ball in the final third and having the desire to get into position wasn't there.

On top of that there were a high amount of set-pieces and corners.

There were a high amount of corners from Lee Brown and there was nothing wrong with the delivery, but they were always first to the ball in the box.

Then in open play we got into good positions but we either didn't pick out the right ball or want it enough.

Steve Lovell

We have got players with quality in the side that can go and hurt teams, it doesn't matter where they are in the league and that is what happened, they thoroughly deserved it.

Obviously, they are going to put some pressure on second half but we defended really well as a group, the plan that we had worked.

It was something we had worked on all week, how we are going to defend and attack with two different formations that we had, the diamond going forward and 4-4-1-1 defensively to stop them, it worked.

It is a great result and I am very proud of them, all the boys, they have given everything and they thoroughly deserved it.

Ben Thompson

We've been on a fantastic run, you can't keep it going the whole season, you are going to have days when it just doesn't quite go for you.

'˜Yesterday was one of those '“ nothing was falling for us, the ball was going over, wide, hitting players and it didn't drop for us.

We have to carry on, keep the form going.

It's only one loss in 12 games so there's no reason why we shouldn't keep our heads held high and go into Monday's training and be ready for next week.

It didn't go our way, we were playing all right football, throughout the game were on top most of it.

We gave away a couple of goals we shouldn't have, that's football, it's not going to go for you every week. You've just got to take that on the chin and learn from it.'

Pompey's unbeaten League One start was ended by Gillingham for a deserved win.

Kenny Jackett's men paid the price for a poor first half, finding themselves 2-0 down at the interval.

They were better after the break, following a double substitution, but continued to suffer from poor delivery in the final third, while 13 corners were not made to count.

For all their possession during the second half, they can have no complaints at a first defeat in 12 league games.

Pompey writer Jordan Cross

Pompey could have no complaints at surrendering their unbeaten league record to struggling Gillingham.

The Blues paid the price for a poor first half and failing to produce the required quality in the final third, as they lost to a team who hadn't won in 10 games.

And what a missed opportunity it was to majorly strengthen their grip on the race for the Championship, with sides at the top losing.

Hopefully Kenny Jackett's men aren't left to rue afternoons like this and home draws against struggling opposition on the previous two outings at Fratton Park.
