Portsmouth's away-day kings become record breakers

Kenny Jackett's table-toppers have claimed another triumph.

For the class of 2018 have recorded Pompey's longest unbeaten away run during a Football League campaign.

Last weekend's 1-0 success at Bradford City took their tally to 10 matches without defeat on the road this season, in all competitions.

It's a remarkable return never before achieved in the Blues' 98-year Football League residency.

Harry Redknapp's Division One champions reached nine without loss in 2002-03, as did the 1923-24 Division Three title winners.

Yet never in the club's history had double figures been established in a Football League campaign '“ until now.

And Jackett's side will be striving to extend that to 11 unbeaten away games when they travel to non-leaguers Maidenhead in the FA Cup on Saturday.

Not merely is the League One leaders' current run outside of Fratton Park hugely impressive, they have also won a staggering eight of those 10 fixtures.

Only draws at Doncaster and Accrington have prevented a clean sweep.

Putting that into context, the 2002-03 team skippered by Paul Merson earned five wins and four draws in all competitions over their nine-game period.

They eventually suffered a loss at Old Trafford, with a 4-1 FA Cup third-round defeat to Manchester United.

Although, during that period, Redknapp's side did manage 11 league games undefeated, before being halted at Wimbledon in March 2003 by Gareth Ainsworth's 87th-minute winner.

Meanwhile, the 1923-24 team collected four victories and five draws in nine away matches until the season's end during their march to the Division Three title.

The following campaign, now in the surroundings of Division Two, they picked up where they left off, establishing another six unbeaten games to reach 15 in total.

It was a run spread over successive seasons, spanning seven months and 20 days, before halted by a 4-1 loss at Bradford City.

In terms of unconquered away results within a season, however, Jackett's men cannot be beaten in Pompey's Football League history.

In fact, only on a mere five occasions have Blues sides registered more than six without loss.

History continues being created in the present.
