Portsmouth v Wycombe Wanderers: The Opposition ViewÂ

Nick Tunney, from the Bucks Free Press, gives the lowdown on Wycombe Wanderers' season so far...

Wycombe have made a decent start to the campaign but results haven't gone for them so far.

They have had a lot of draws '“ four from eight games so far.

But Wanderers should have beaten Plymouth and Blackpool away, while they were in control for the most part of their 3-2 loss at Charlton.

They at least deserved a point at the Valley.

The performances are there but too many sloppy errors are costing them points.

This is Wanderers' fifth year of a five-year plan and the aim is to stay up in League One.

They've already talked about the 55-point target in order to survive and anything else will be a bonus.

From what I've seen, they're more than capable of staying up. Wycombe just need to turn those draws into wins in order to do so.

The impetus from the League Two promotion last season has petered out a little bit.

They lost at Doncaster in their second game of the season '“ that was their first defeat on the road since December.

Wanderers are particularly strong away from home but have suffered two losses on their travels already '“ that's more than they had done in eight or nine months.

The momentum has fizzled out but the performances are there.

Wycombe have been playing a slightly different style, as well.

Adebayo Akinfenwa was outstanding last season but he hasn't started every game, coming off the bench last week against Oxford.

They had Craig Mackail-Smith playing down the middle with Fred Onyedinma and Randell Williams out wide.

It was a 4-3-3 formation with two quick, tricky men out wide '“ quite similar to how Pompey play.

Wycombe are not lacking any confidence.

Over the summer, Gareth Ainsworth kept the majority of the same side that yielded promotion but have added a few quality signings.

Former Pompey loanee Ryan Allsop isn't a bad keeper '“ he's a very good shot-stopper and his kicking is very good.

Jason McCarthy arrived for an undisclosed fee from Barnsley and what a signing he has been.

He was Wycombe's player of the season when on loan from Southampton in the 2015-16 campaign and I'd say he's one of the best right-backs in the division '“ him and Ronan Curtis should have a right good battle!

Luke O'Nien left for Sunderland by the Chairboys brought in Bryn Morris, who I would say is arguably better.

He's a very gifted player, technically very good.
