It was straight off the training ground and into the Fratton Park net as the unlikely figure of Bondz N’Gala led Pompey to victory.

The centre-back netted twice in 14 second-half minutes as the Blues beat Rochdale 3-0.

Both were headers from Ricky Holmes right-wing corners – the first-time Pompey have scored from dead-ball deliveries this term.

What’s more, N’Gala revealed first-team coach Alan McLoughlin had been working on the routines after training just 24 hours earlier.

He said: ‘We did a bit of work at the end of training on Friday and it paid off.

‘Macca is always getting into us and saying we hadn’t scored from a set-piece yet, so me and Sonny (Bradley) were determined – and the delivery was perfect from Ricky.

‘He’s always onto us about our movement in the box and never being still. I guess I lost the same guy twice, I’m not too sure, though. I was watching the ball to be honest.

‘I had a great chance in the first half and was very unhappy to miss that but I was glad to get two after that.

‘For the first I had to stoop a little bit to get to it but got good contact.

‘The second was exactly the same. I couldn’t believe my luck that I scored two goals.

‘I actually think I should have done better with a third one after that at the far post and could have got a hat-trick in the end!

‘We deserved the result, though, and played really well.’

N’Gala’s goals, in his second Fratton appearance for the Blues, were his first since November 2011.
