Scruffy goals will do to get Pompey's season on track

The Blues winger wants to see his side deliver some ugly finishes in an effort to pick up a much-needed win to boost confidence.

Pompey undertake their longest trip of the campaign as they make the 285-mile hike to Fleetwood tonight.

Lowe had a day to remember against the Cod Army at Fratton Park in September as he grabbed a double – including a rare header – in his side’s 4-1 win.

The 23-year-old is out to get back among the goals at Highbury Stadium after a barren run of one goal in 30 appearances.

The former Hampton & Richmond man knows he and his team-mates have to up their goal threat.

That’s especially the case with top-scorer Brett Pitman sidelined, after he limped off with a hamstring injury in Saturday’s defeat at Southend.

Lowe isn’t fussed how the goals go in, with the Blues desperate to find some impetus.

After just one win in 2018, the attacking talent would be happy to see a goal go in off his backside if it delivers success.

Lowe said: ‘Hopefully it can be more of the same as last time (against Fleetwood) for me.

‘They did me okay the last time we played, so fingers crossed there’s more of the same in this one

‘A header would be lovely again. To be honest, any goal would be lovely!

‘We just need to find a win from somewhere.

‘It doesn’t matter if it’s not me who gets the winner.

‘We just need to get three points to get things moving again.

‘If we score one of the scrappy goals we’re conceding, we’d be happy with that.

‘No-one’s scoring screamers against us, so maybe it would be good to win a game with a scruffy goal.

‘A lot of our goals are decent goals, good moves.

‘We need to start scoring the scruffy goals as well.

‘Those count just the same and add up to get you up the table.’

Supporters will be making the long trek to the north west after turning out in force for the past two games on the road.

After 6,257 saw the late, late win at MK Dons, another 1,920 Pompey fans travelled to Essex to witness the weekend loss at Roots Hall.

Those supporters stuck with their team, despite mistakes at the back proving costly.

Lowe knows there will be more loyal backing tonight – and his team are fortunate to have that.

He added: ‘The support’s been unreal.

‘They stayed with us on Saturday and travelled in numbers of MK Dons.

‘Having that backing really is key.

‘When we pushed in the second half at Southend they were right with us.

‘It’s good they’re still travelling in numbers and supporting us as they do. I’m sure it will be the same at Fleetwood.

‘It’s a long trip, but everyone else has had to go there. Other teams have gone there and picked up points.

‘We know what they’re about and we’ll do some more work on that ahead of the game. We know exactly what to expect.’
