Ryan Taylor is to make his awaited return to Pompey training this week.

But Danny East and Simon Ferry are again ruled out in the build-up to Saturday’s visit of Cheltenham to Fratton Park.

Taylor has been absent since injuring his groin during his match-winning performance against AFC Wimbledon.

In his absence, Michael Drennan has arrived on loan to bolster the Blues’ striking options, although he missed Tuesday’s draw at Chesterfield through international commitments.

But Taylor, who has netted three goals in seven games, is nearing availability for Richie Barker once again.

And the Pompey boss will monitor the former Rotherham striker’s progress, with one eye on the Robins fixture.

Barker said: ‘Ryan is going to be training this week, so we will see how he gets through that. He is certainly improving, though.

‘Danny East and Simon Ferry are still seeing specialists and having different opinions, so at the moment they won’t be involved this weekend.

‘Ryan is closest.’

Meanwhile, Drennan and Daniel Alfei will be available for selection this weekend.

Drennan (Republic of Ireland) and Alfei (Wales) have under-21 commitments tonight, which ruled them out of the Chesterfield trip.

Barker added: ‘At Chesterfield we were missing two who started the last game.

‘Fair play to Joe Devera, he came in and did a real good job for us. He was probably not quite ready but got his head down and got on with it.

‘Michael and Daniel’s matches are both tonight, so they will be back at training tomorrow.’
