Johnny Ertl believes he has lost none of his understanding with new recruit Thery Racon.
The French midfielder returned to Pompey last week and turned in an impressive display as the Blues claimed a 3-0 win over Rochdale.
Having become a regular foil to the skipper in midfield last term, Racon’s return also coincided with the Austrian’s best display of the season.
And both are set to continue their partnership at Plymouth in tomorrow’s League Two clash (12.15pm kick-off).
‘It’s really good having Thery back in the side,’ said Ertl.
‘It’s easier because he knows the place inside out and we know him. He’s a good lad and he fits in well.
‘We played a lot of games together last season – probably more than 20.
‘So we obviously have that understanding.
‘He’s a really good player, he reads the game well and has plenty of experience of playing at a higher level.’
The competition for places in midfield has cranked up recently, with Gavin Mahon also joining the ranks that already included Simon Ferry and Romain Padovani.
Ertl said: ‘Every one of them is a great character but the team is the most important thing – it’s not about individuals.
‘It’s a long, long season and everybody will get their chance.
‘Last week we got back to playing with that energy against Rochdale and followed that up against Oxford.
‘But now we have got to crack on again at Plymouth.’
