Guy Whittingham believes Bondz N’Gala can comfortably cushion the blow of losing Joe Devera to injury.
Devera picked up a grade one hamstring tear at Burton on Saturday, forcing him out of action after only eight minutes.
His replacement was N’Gala, who turned in a powerful and dominant display alongside Sonny Bradley at the heart of the Blues defence.
Pompey are still assessing the extent of Devera’s injury, yet clearly he faces a battle to line up against Fleetwood this weekend.
That would put the former Stevenage defender in the frame to replace him.
Shaun Cooper, meanwhile, is expected to feature at right-back in place of the suspended Yassin Moutaouakil.
Whittingham said: ‘Bondz was great (at Burton), that is why we had no problems bringing Joe off with a hamstring, you can’t risk him going on.
‘He has been waiting for this opportunity and I thought did fantastically well.
‘Steve Allen knows his job and as soon as somebody tells you he has tweaked a hamstring there is no point continuing because that only makes it worse, so Joe had to come off.
‘So when you have Bondz coming on and playing that well it shows the importance of having three really good centre halves and the importance of having competition for places.
‘At Mansfield I thought Bondz and Sonny won a lot of things in the air and made sure their centre forwards didn’t have it easy.
‘We have been very lucky with the board here, they have backed us all the way and we wanted to try to push it a little bit and get something extra in.
‘With the likes of Bondz and Shaun we’ve done it for a reason as Saturday showed.’
