Guy Whittingham has expressed his delight at being able to continue his successful double act with Ian Woan in support of Blues boss Steve Cotterill.

The Pompey coaching duo both signed new contracts this week to commit themselves through to the summer of 2013 after forming a good relationship with the manager since his arrival.

While Woan worked in Avram Grant’s back-room staff last term, Whittingham was promoted to join the first-team set-up after previously working with the Academy.

The former Pompey striker believes the stability will benefit the club after the upheaval of last summer.

Whitt-ingham said: ‘I’m delighted. Despite a few of the difficult things that have happened at the club, it really has been very enjoyable.

‘It’s great to stay for another couple of years.

‘We’ve developed a good understanding between all of us and we work well together.

‘The manager is the manager and what he says goes – but I’d like to think that myself and Ian have given him our views and supported him in every way we can.

‘It’s great that we have that bit of stability after the uncertainty that we’ve all been through over the past 12-to-18 months.

‘That hasn’t been nice but it’s great to have a bit of continuity and a future plan.’

While Whittingham has been at the club throughout the administration period, he believes there are plenty of reasons to be optimistic about the future.

He said: ‘We’ve had some very tough times at the club but, hopefully, those times are gone now. We’re pretty sure that they have and we are all looking forward to working together in the future.’
