Pompey's American adventures of the past

Chief executive Mark Catlin has already spoken to New York Cosmos officials over the idea.

Crossing the Atlantic in the interests of preparation for the campaign ahead is not a new concept to the Blues.

Under Steve Cotterill, they embarked on such trips in the summers of 2010 and 2011.

However, they recorded just the one win in open play, while the travelling was blighted by delays.

Marlon Park and David Nugent were the scorers in front of a 700 crowd to collect a first win of Pompey’s stay.

Commonwealth Stadium,

Alberta, Canada

Nadir Ciftci netted in a 1-1 draw against the Canadian side, sending the fixture into a penalty shootout.

Pompey won that event 5-4, with Liam O’Brien producing the winning save, to collect the Edmonton Cup.

A crowd of 9,987 saw Pompey end their trip in disappointing circumstances with a 4-0 defeat in Washington.

The first match of Cotterill’s second tour of America kicked off with a draw against a select XI side.

The Blues had to fight back from a two-goal deficit thanks to Sean Flatley’s own goal and Greg Halford’s 75th-minute header.
