The Pompey defender feels he is capable of another start tomorrow against a team he regards a one of the most talented in League Two.

Burgess made his comeback against Ipswich on Tuesday night after five weeks out with an ankle injury.

The 24-year-old delivered a comfortable display before being subbed suffering from cramp with five minutes left.

Burgess underlined he is fine, however, and ready to continue if called upon.

He said: ‘My ankle is fine. It was just a bit of cramp in my calves.

‘The game came at the right time. I got the game’s fitness and was happy with that.

‘Now we move on to Oxford. I don’t know if I’ll be out there, it’s up to the gaffer, but we’ll be working hard to get the three points.

‘It’s an exciting prospect. It’s a game we think we can win.

‘Hopefully we’ll have another full crowd.

‘They are a good side and I would say, talent-wise, they are right up there with us in the division.

‘But we go into the game in good form and with confidence.

‘It’s about what we can do and we have faith in the players in the squad.

‘They are a good side in good form.

‘I’ve watched them a couple of times and they have done well this season.

‘We’re as good as anyone on their day, though, and hopefully we can do the same as what we did to Ipswich.

Pompey go into the Oxford game sat four points adrift of their opponents and a substantial 11 points off leaders Plymouth and Northampton in second place.

Paul Cook’s side have games in hand over all the teams above them in the table, however.

Burgess isn’t worried about the size of the gap.

He said: ‘You don’t want the gap growing, but we aren’t worried.

‘It’s 11 points but there are games in hand.

‘There is still a lot of football to be played yet and we are confident we’ll be there at the end.’
