Portsmouth boss open to extending midfielder's loan

The midfielder is on a youth loan with the National League club until his 21st birthday on December 6.

May has started all six league matches since his Recreation Ground arrival in September, scoring three goals in the process.

The switch has offered first-team involvement, following one Checkatrade Trophy outing with the Blues this season.

Jackett has already been to watch May in action for Gary Waddock's 16th-placed side.

And he would consider letting the youngster extend the stay to bolster his ongoing development.

Jackett said: '˜I went to watch Adam play against Maidstone for his second appearance and it was good to see him perform at that level.

'˜It has given him a focus on a Saturday, which is terrific, and we are in a situation now where, should we get injuries or need that extra midfield player, we can call him back.

'˜We don't necessarily want to do that, it would be great if he can get a spell there.

'˜I have a lot of time for their manager Gary Waddock. As a club and a manager, I don't think I could send Adam anywhere better.

'˜I've kept in touch with him on the phone, but recently also sat down with him to talk through games, talk through the game I saw, what their manager has said, how he finds the standard, what he thinks he needs to do to get into Portsmouth's midfield.

'˜I think it has been very, very good for him and, from our point of view, I am also pleased with the lad.

'˜He can come back at any time, while that loan can also be extended. We will take it through until that period and see where we are '“ and also where he is.'

With Pompey unwilling for May to become cup tied, he sat out their recent 2-0 FA Cup victory over Kettering.

Instead the home-grown product returned to the south coast to train with Jackett's squad, giving the manager an opportunity to assess his progress.

Jackett added: '˜Adam trains pretty well anyway, while he is part of a group that has come through together so it didn't take him any time to fit in again with us.

'˜But, similarly, from our point of view, it's good to talk and touch base with him.'
