And it appears his desire to fulfil those dreams with the Blues has gone down well with the Fratton faithful.

Clarke has been a massive hit at Pompey after Paul Cook initially brought him in on loan in the summer of 2015.

Since then he has made his move to Fratton Park permanent, racking up 139 appearances in the process, and firmly-establishing himself as a mainstay in Kenny Jackett's League One table-toppers.

Pompey defender Matt Clarke

His performances with the start & crescent on his chest have attracted many admiring glances from other clubs '“ including Watford, Reading, Bristol City and Brighton.

The Blues rebuffed enquiries for his services over the summer as they were determined to keep hold of their prized-asset.

And it looks like their resolve will be rewarded with Clarke, who signed a a new deal with the club earlier this year, keen to continue his Pompey association into the Championship and beyond.

It's a match up that Blues fans hope can continue for years to come.

According to those who posted comments on portsmouth.co.uk, our Facebook page, Portsmouth FC '“ The News, and Twitter, Clarke is a player they see as fundamental to their long-term ambitions.

Here's what fans have had to say...

Michael Stephenson

Quite a remarkable player. How many centre-backs have the skills that Matt has on the ball?

Quick feet, a sharp player's brain and so dominant and consistent.

I think he also helps bring the best out of Jack Whatmough.

With Lee Brown improving all of the time - and when Nathan Thompson plays well - probably the best back four in Div 1.

Steve Smith

If we go up then I think he will stay. If not, then he will leave. He is better than League One.

Ryan Boare

Absolutely top draw of a player!!

David Tiller

Premiership quality already.

Grey Wood

Great to hear. Stand out man of the match for me most games.

Let's hope his desire matches ours PUP. #Pompey.

Simon Miles

Hero to be fair. Best business we have done and hopefully we all get what we want from it.

Paul Lewis

Really like the fact that he comes over extremely level headed, we have a lot of good young players in our squad.

Great to be a Pompey fan at the moment.

David Horne

Good to hear.

Jake Meyers

I'd love to see Clarke given the captaincy.
