While Andy Moon is patiently awaiting his next Pompey summons following an enforced three-game sabbatical.

Yet no doubt all three will reflect on today’s Carrow Road anniversary with a smile and reminisce over happier times.

It was January 2019 when Pompey claimed a show-stopping late triumph at Premier League-bound Norwich City.

Substitute Andre Green was the matchwinner, five minutes into time added on, teed up by a magnificent long diagonal pass from Dion Donohue.

Kenny Jackett’s side had been under intense pressure from the 10-man Canaries with the scoreline goalless in the FA Cup third-round encounter.

Then Donohue, with black bandage wrapped around his head, launched a counter attack down the left – and the League One side had claimed a notable cup upset.

It was a special moment – encapsulated so beautifully by BBC Radio Solent’s Moon and his faithful co-commentator Guy Whittingham.

Now in his ninth season covering Pompey, it remains a favourite moment.

‘The best kind of goal to commentate are those which build from the back, so you can go through the gears before the moment culminates with a finish.

‘On the way home from Carrow Road, Guy was driving, with me in the passenger seat, and, at one point on the M25, both of our phones lit up with message after message.

‘We had no idea what was going on until I scrolled through to realise our voices had been used on Match of the Day. Nobody had told us that would be happening!

‘It was my first time at Carrow Road and the most notable moment in eight seasons of commentating on Pompey. You can’t beat a last-minute winner against a club such as Norwich in the FA Cup.

‘I was shocked at the subsequent fan reaction; I didn’t quite expect it.

‘It’s nice when a bit of your work receives recognition and reminds you of the privileges of the job.

People have told me they were jumping around their living rooms when they heard the goal being described, and it makes you realise just how special moments like that are to people.’

It has been two years since that occasion, which incidentally also represented Ben Thompson’s final Pompey appearance.

There were two more Blues outings before he was recalled by his club and featured prominently in that season’s successful play-off challenge to reach the Premier League.

Last season there were loan spells at Preston and Charlton, which totalled just nine first-team starts, before his Villa exit.

As for Donohue, who set up that goal, that summer he left Pompey at the end of his two-year deal.

There was a spell at Mansfield, spanning one match, before he was sacked following an off-field altercation which warranted court proceedings.

He later re-emerged at Swindon, but last month quit to spend more time with a terminally-ill niece.

Before Christmas, Donohue was reportedly on trial at League Two Bolton.

As for Moon, tune in on Sunday to hear him and Pompey back in action at Bristol City – in the FA Cup third round.
