An ankle problem has ruled Close out of tonight's clash with Fleetwood – and is likely to also sideline him for Saturday’s visit of Accrington.

In the meantime, Morris is set to make his long-awaited return in a youthful Pompey side taking on the Navy at HMS Temeraire this afternoon.

The midfielder has not featured at any level since limping out of a pre-season friendly against the Rocks in July 2019.

Now Morris is inching towards a first-team return – but not yet.

Kenny Jackett said: ‘I had thought about Bryn (replacing Close), but he is going to play against the Navy at midday at HMS Temeraire.

‘It’s slightly a youth game, but will help him along. I think he looks fit in training, I don’t think he will be too far off if we need him.

‘In terms of recalling Bryn, it depends on what else happens, availability of players, as well as form. It’s a game-by-game basis.

‘Ben did his ankle against Peterborough early on, it will certainly keep him out tonight and probably Saturday as well.

‘I think he was okay in the game, but it was always going to blow up the next day after quite a tough tackle.

‘We will see if he makes Saturday, I would doubt it at the moment, he has rolled it.

‘Ben’s a very consistent player, a very consistent person, and doesn’t get many injuries.’
