Former Portsmouth boss Paul Cook set to take charge of Ipswich - reports

Paul Cook is set to replace Paul Lambert as Ipswich boss, reports suggest.

According to The Athletic, the Tractor Boys are on the verge of being taken over by a group of American investors – led by Los Angeles-based businessman Brett Johnson – for £17.5m.

And one of their first acts in charge at Portman Road will be to axe the under-fire Lambert and install Cook as manager

Lambert took charge of Ipswich in October 2018 but failed to prevent their relegation from the Championship that season.

And after finishing 11th in League One last campaign, the Tractor Boys have so far been unable to mount a promotion push in the 2020-21 season.

Ipswich currently sit 10th in the table and large swathes of fans have called for Lambert to be sacked – along with the local paper the East Anglian Daily Times.

The Athletic reports that owner Marcus Evans is ready to to sell the club to an American consortium and they want Cook as the Tractor Boys’ new boss.

The Liverpudlian, who guided Pompey to the League Two title in 2017, has been out of work since July.

Cook resigned from Wigan after they were relegated from the Championship when hit with a 12-point deducation for entering administration – having finished 13th in the standings.

The ex-Chesterfield supremo has been linked with several jobs this season – including Sheffield Wednesday, Cardiff, Bristol City and Salford.

Ipswich travel to Fratton Park on Saturday, March 20.
