Cotterill takes the reins at New Meadow after the sacking of Sam Ricketts earlier this week. He’s signed a three-and-a-half year deal with the club.

The 56-year-old returns management after a two-and-a-half year absence, having been axed by Birmingham City in March 2018.

Cotterill, who spent just more than a year in the Fratton Park hot seat before leaving for Nottingham Forest in October 2011, has the challenge of steering the Shrews clear of relegation this season.

Town languish second-bottom of the table, having failed to win their past eight matches.

Shrewsbury chief executive Brian Caldwell is delighted to welcome Cotterill to the club.

He’ll be in charge of the Shrews’ FA Cup second-round tie against Oxford City on Sunday

Caldwell said: ‘We are delighted to announce Steve Cotterill as the new Manager of Shrewsbury Town Football Club who has signed a three-and-a-half-year contract with the club.

‘Steve brings a wealth of managerial experience with around 700 games to date. He has had a lot of success during his managerial career including five promotions, an EFL Trophy win, and three Manager of the Year Awards.

‘It has been a whirlwind 48 hours but with matches coming thick and fast, we felt it was vitally important to appoint as quickly as possible.

‘We are very grateful to Steve and his representative for their assistance in making this all happen in such a timeous fashion.’

Pompey travel to Shrewsbury on Saturday, March 27.
