The central defender has not played for 11 months after damaging his knee against Doncaster in February 2019.

Yet he is lining up against the Iron in the Leasing.com Trophy at Fratton Park this evening.

Whatmough will partner Sean Raggett in the centre of Kenny Jackett’s defence, with Christian Burgess on the bench.

There is also a recall for Gareth Evans, who skippers the team having failed to make the match-day 18 at Bolton on Saturday.

Also coming into the starting XI are Craig MacGillivray, Ryan Williams, Ben Close and Brandon Haunstrup.

However, once again there is no place in the squad for Brett Pitman and Paul Downing.

The teams are competing for a semi-final place, with Pompey seeking successive Wembley appearances.

Pompey: MacGillivray, Bolton, Whatmough, Raggett, Haunstrup, McGeehan, Close, Harness, Evans, Williams, Marquis.

Subs: Bass, Seddon, Burgess, Naylor, Cannon, Hawkins, Hackett-Fairchild.
